Blackpool Casino Drawing 236

General Observations
This is perhaps one of the most recognisably "Bauhaus" pieces of architecture that Emberton produced, being the main stair for Blackpool Casino. It has a very shallow pitch, very leisurely.

Travertine marble is a pretty upmarket sort of finish, and was also used by Joe in his store for Simpsons of Piccadilly. Later generations may associate the Modern Movement with cutting corners, but in many 1930's projects high quality materials and craftsmanship were common.
Features to Note
The name "Carrier" on the drawing issue list is of course the US firm which invented air-conditioning, and this firm's name is repeated on Emberton drawings throughout many of his projects.

I seem to remember at one time seeing radiators having been fixed in an incongruous and afterthought-looking way adjacent the glazing, indicating that the original heating arrangement had proved inadequate.
